It was my birthday yesterday, and what a lovely one it was! I had lots of great gifts from family and friends, including book vouchers to fund my habit, and some lovely Persephone books from my (possibly perfect?) boyfriend.
I may have hinted just a little that I would like one, but I didn’t expect four and two of which I really wanted to read;
- Little Boy Lost, Marghanita Laski (I loved The Victorian Chaise Longue)
- Someone at a Distance, by Dorothy Whipple
…and two others that I hadn’t heard of but am looking forward to reading;
- William – An Englishman, by Cecily Hamilton
- It’s Hard to be Hip over Thirty, by Judith Viorst
Oh, and a subscription to Vogue too which is my other favourite reading material 🙂
Have you read any of these books?
Happy belated-Birthday! What perfect gifts! I read It’s Hard to be Hip over Thirty early this year and really enjoyed it, rather to my surprise since I’m not a great fan of poetry. Both William – An Englishman and Someone at a Distance are in my TBR pile and I’m looking forward to finding the time to read them.
Thank you Claire 🙂 They are great aren’t they! I didn’t actually realise that ‘It’s hard to be hip…’ is a poem – I shall look forward to reading something a bit different.
Happy Birthday Week! And nice haul. x
Thanks Lija! I’m extending my birthday week as much as possible 🙂
Happy Birthday for yesterday! I hope you had a good day.
I have read both Little Boy Lost and Someone at a Distance. Little Boy Lost is one of my favourite books ever so I hope you like it.
I had a lovely day thank you! That’s a great recommendation for Little Boy Lost. Really looking forward to that one.
Happy birthday! Glad you had such a lovely day and got such beautiful gifts! The Whipple and Laski are both magnificent – I haven’t read the other two but you will love the ones I have, promise!
Thank you! It really was lovely. I can’t wait to read them 🙂
sounds like a great birthday and lovely persephone books they are so pretty ,all the best stu
Oh they are pretty aren’t they!! Cheers Stu!
Happy birthday! Love the title of “30”. I’ve not read any Persephone books yet, but I plan to.
Great title it is. Ooh, I’ll be interested to know what you think of your first Persephone when you get around to it.
Happy Birthday Polly! :o)
What a perfect boyfriend indeed! Feeding your book habbit – what more can a girl ask for?
I have read Little Boy Lost and loved it and I have Someone at a Distance at home just ready and waiting – hope you enjoy!
I know – brilliant!
Thanks for the birthday wishes 🙂
Cant wait to read LBL!
Happy Birthday! I’ve read the first 2 Persephones on your list and they were wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
Thanks Mrs B for the lovely birthday wishes 🙂
Happy Birthday for yesterday, hope that you had a lovely day! I love getting books on your birthday, especially unexpected ones!
I did have a fab day. Surprise books are always good 🙂
A boyfriend that gives Persephones as gifts is perfect, indeed (it has nothing at all to do with out hinting and gushing and bemoaning out absolute need for them).
Little Boy Lost and Someone at a Distance are both AMAZING and two of my favourite Persephones.
William I haven’t read yet (nor own) but I have read and heard such good things; Nicola Beauman mentions it frequently in her book, A Very Great Profession, and I must read it at some point. I think you will enjoy it and convince me to buy it soon.
It’s Hard to be Hip Over Thirty is one of their poetry collections and has had mixed reviews but I’m looking forward to reading mine next year when I turn thirty!
Enjoy your beautiful gifts, Polly, and love the roses.
Hahaha, too true.
Thank you for reconfirming how much I want to read Laski again and discover Whipple.
Oh you and your possibly perfect boyfriend… you make me sick!!!! Hahaha only joking. He did really really well! Hope it was a super douper birthday!
HAHA it’s a bit gross really isn’t it. Ah but I couldn’t help but gush a bit. He did indeed – he said he even looked up reviews to see which ones people liked!
Great picks!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🙂
Thanks for the happy-birthday wishes 🙂
Happy birthday! What lovely booky presents!
I haven’t read any of the books, but I’ve actually been quite intrigued by Little Boy Lost too, so I do hope you enjoy it.
Thanks Jenny! Lovely presents indeed 🙂
Happy belated birthday! 🙂 You got some lovely books, enjoy! I’ve only read one or two Persephones so far, but I can see why everyone adores them.
Thank you for the birthday wishes!
Happy belated birthday! Enjoy your new books 🙂
Sorry, am a bit late to the party, Polly, but here’s wishing you a belated birthday. There’s nothing nicer than receiving books as gifts, so you’re lucky the bf knows how to keep you happy!! 😉 I’ve not read any of those Persephones but I do have Little Boy Lost and Someone at a Distance in my TBR. I will get around to reading them one day… along with the other 400+ books lying around this apartment.
Happy Belated Birthday! There’s something with August babies. I gave myself a few Persephones as a gift and Someone at a distance is one of them. I just started reading it.
